It’s mid-december, exactly 12 days until Christmas Eve – and I couldn’t be more in the festive spirit. This is all thanks to for KING + COUNTRY, who made a spellbinding UK live debut at the Indigo at O2 in London last night. Celebrating the release of their cinematic concept album ‘A Drummer Boy Christmas (LIVE),’ the experience was infused with everything you would want from a festive show with added surprises – we were truly mesmerised.
The Grammy-award winning duo, consisting of brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone, have an extensive global fanbase – yet, this is the first time they’ve ever played in the UK. As a result, audience members travelled from all over the world, facing their fear of flying and making sure they caught the band all the way from Australia. After witnessing the marvellous spectacle, it’s no wonder many made the journey.
Opening with a glowing version of ‘In The Bleak Midwinter,’ for KING + COUNTRY set the tone for a performance filled with mystery, theatrics and an instrumental parade. Backed by a band that brought the cinematic album to life, their performance was charismatic, energetic and completely open, welcoming the audience to join their festive fun.

Each section was perfectly crafted, echoing the feel of each classic carol or fan-loved original. Whilst the beginning of the set trailblazer through jubilant highlights such as ‘Joy To The World’, ‘Angels We Have Heard On High’ and ‘Do You Hear What I Hear’, the theatrical showcased occasionally paused for snippets of reflection, asking the audience to sit as they delivered heartfelt, peaceful renditions of their biopic lead single, ‘Unsung Hero’ and a truly beautiful version of ‘Silent Night,’ which bewitched the audience into a harmonious, touching sing-along.
The album’s concept, ‘A Drummer Boy Christmas,’ was honoured completely, featuring an extensive collection of percussive instruments – snares, hand drums, maraccas, tambourines and crash symbols to name a few. This ultimately kicked off in the set closer, ‘Little Drummer Boy,’ which erupted into a drumming frenzy – setting the audience off into wild cheers. The little drummer boy himself made an appearance, giving the show a festive, fun narrative that resonated with family members in the audience.
Joel and Luke Smallbone’s synergy was present throughout, harmonising seamlessly and putting the audience at ease with their playful stage presence and warm stage presence. They embraced the stage with vibrant energy, yet also led the way for sincerity, dedicating a section of time to their partnership with the charity ‘Compassion,’ which is committed to supporting children in poverty. It touched on what’s truly important – something that often comes creeping up on our minds this time of year.
What a dynamic, joyful whirlwind the show was – wrapped up perfectly by their colourful, steel drum-infused rendition of ‘Joy To The World.’ For a UK debut, the jam-packed room was in the palm of their hands, and for new fans, they’re sure to have them returning for more.
