Arctic Dreams discuss ‘Storm’!

When did the initial idea for your latest single come together?

[ALEX_Y]: “I had it sometime right after we moved in. I had researched the Dyatlov Pass tragedy quite a lot and it was a reasonable decision to come up with a song about it. ”

[SYDIUS]: “ It grows and evolves till the release. And with our tendency to remaster-rearrange everything imaginable and unimaginable – even after ”

[GENA]: “ The main idea of the track was born in Alex’s head. And me and the guys put some meat on it. ”

[NENAD]: “The main ideas, riffs, chorus and song structure was already there, as a foundation on where to go. Then me and the guys all added some ideas to make it feel more alive.”

[ROMAN]: “When I came, it was already in work so I just made a couple of suggestions regardless of drums”

How would you describe the track, to a reader that is unfamiliar with the band?

[ALEX_Y]: “Well, if we talk about the last released single “Storm”, it’s our interpretation of Viking metal. But the new single “Frozen little beings” is our interpretation of melodic death metal.  But actually we don’t like to label our music like that)). Now it’s done for clarity)) We usually call it arctic-metal. ”

[SYDIUS]: “ If you like new metal with some old-school ideas, raw sound and some soundtrack music approach” [GENA]: “ Metall  ”

[NENAD]: “Storm – epic lovechild of Morbid Angel, At The Gates and Amon Amarth.Frozen Little Beings – downtuned 90’s Ministry. These are the vibes I get from these new singles.”

[ROMAN]: “A Viking song with brutal and dirty sound”

Can you tell us a bit more about the meaning behind the track?

[ALEX_Y]: “”Storm” tells of the harsh life of the Vikings, of their raids across the seas. “Frozen little beings” is a track about the tragedy that happened on Dyatlov Pass in the Northern Urals in 1959. If you don’t know: 9 students of the Ural University went on a high complexity hike in the mountains in the winter of 1959. A couple of months later they were all found dead with absolute cause of death. The circumstances of what happened are so unclear that for many decades no one can understand what happened to them there.”

[SYDIUS]: “ All meaning provided by Alex ”

[GENA]: “That’s a question better put to the author of the lyric”

[NENAD]: “Alex knows best.”

[ROMAN]: “I don’t know I didn’t read=)”

How would you say that the track compares to anything you’ve done before?

[ALEX_Y]: “ Well, about “Storm”, we went a little bit out of our concept, because we didn’t get the idea how you can use gothic synthesizers in a song like that. That’s actually the main difference from the old material.  ”

[SYDIUS]: “ Cause we have the core music concept of the band, and every song is an application of this concept, though might vary ”

[GENA]: “ This track, unlike the previous ones, has no synths or pads. Only live violins cellos and trumpets ”

[NENAD]: “It sounds more driven and daring.”

[ROMAN]: “Actually, this track differs from all that Artic Dreams did before. Before it was Industrial-Death-Metal with kinda apocalyptic sci-fi themes. The Storm single is some kind of Folk-Death-Metal with a Viking theme. There is not much electronic sound but the sound is very dirty and it is done on purpose”

What was the hardest part about putting it together, and why?

[ALEX_Y]: “ Mixing. Mixing again. It took us a long time to get the mixing we wanted. We really struggled with it for the Storm single. It’s because of the very tight arrangement of the guitars. ”

[SYDIUS]: “ My responsibility is guitar parts so that’s my focus ”

[GENA]: “ There’s a lot going on in this track. It’s quite difficult to put it all together so that every instrument has enough space in the mix ”

[NENAD]: “Having the guitars and synths/keyboards/orchestra not swallow each other up, from the preproduction phase all the way to the mixing stage.”

[ROMAN]: “The hardest part for us was to find a mix that works”

Why should a reader check out the track?

[ALEX_Y]: “ Cause it’s awesome!  ”

[SYDIUS]: “ Cause it’s good! ”

[GENA]: “ Come on. It’s not like a new metal track comes out every day =) ”

[NENAD]: “It beats the hell out of buying testosterone supplements.”

[ROMAN]: “Can not agree with Sydius more=)”

What else can you tell us about the track, that we haven’t covered in this interview?

[ALEX_Y]: “ We’d really like to make a real music video for this track. But it’s very difficult and expensive, because you have to do historical footage and also at sea. In the end, we ended up with a lyric video.  ”

[SYDIUS]: “ That while we answer we’re not sure which track is to be released along with this interview  ”

[GENA]: “Why talk about the track, listen to it =)”

[NENAD]: “It’s a song.”

[ROMAN]: “-”
