A Songwriter’s Diary offers a poignant look at Gardner’s evolution as an artist, emphasising the importance of her early work and the foundation of her artistry. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, the album has gained new significance for Gardner, who witnessed the storm’s impact on her hometown of Burnsville, North Carolina. These songs tell her story, reflecting her upbringing, family, and experiences, capturing memories through the music written in Burnsville.

Gardner hopes to transport listeners to her Appalachian roots and various stages of her life. “I want to give y’all a glimpse of my world,” she shares. From childhood joys to the pains of first heartbreaks, the album provides a sonic journey through her past and present. She envisions it as a safe haven for listeners, saying, “In a spiritual and euphoric sense, I wanted this album to encompass the real magic of music and the journey it can take you on if you let it.”

In conjunction with the album’s release, Gardner premieres a powerful new music video for “Cry,” directed by Ryan Hood. The video weaves between her soulful performance and the emotional unraveling of her ex’s new relationship, exploring themes of heartbreak and a yearning for retribution. With lines like, “I hope she leaves you; I hope she breaks your heart like you broke mine,” Gardner’s rich, velvet tone conveys the lingering pain of unresolved love.
