Live Review: Summer Sessions Southampton – Tom Jones and Madness

Tom Jones and Madness took over Southampton City Centre on Father’s Day weekend as both acts saw thousands of fans turn up to the Guildhall Square.

Australian sisters Germein supported Tom Jones on the Saturday who was a fantastic warm up for the 84 year musical legend.

Tom Jones turned 84 earlier this month so it was fitting that fans sang his praises in Happy Birthday despite the weather being fairly overcast.

The Welsh legend sang the likes of classics such as It’s Not Unusual among other favourites such as the 60s iconic track What’s New Pussycat? as well as the 90s anthem Sex Bomb.

Singalong favourite Delilah certainly put a smile on fans faces as the delighted audience then had a little sensual dance with You Can Leave Your Hat On.

After mentioning fellow iconic musical legends such as Prince and Elvis Presley, Sir Tom then performed an energetic encore version of Johnny B. Goode that was original sang by Chuck Berry.

The whole evening was fantastic and the set up for the venue and staff were simply spot on and certainly proved that Summer Session is the place to be in Southampton this Summer.

Father’s Day then was around the corner with Madness performing on Sunday with the brilliant Kid Kapichi supporting. With England clashing in the Euro 2024 group stage match against Serbia, it was fitting that Madness lead singer Suggs provided updates throughout the evening.

The band kicked off their 90-minute gig with One Step Beyond that certainly got the crowd dancing from the get go.

The show attracted people of all ages as the Camden based ska band played their classics such as Baggy Trousers, It Must Be Love, and House of Fun. Songs from their number one album Theatre of The Absurd Presents C’est la Vie was then showcased as Suggs managed to mention it was number one a few times as well as then saying jokingly it was only in Albania.

Overall it was a fantastic Father’s Day weekend and we couldn’t praise the team at Summer Sessions more.
