Interview: Cthulhu Dreamt

When did the initial idea for your latest release come together?

Our latest release, an EP called ‘Precursor’ was something we worked on over the summer of 2022. We had something else scheduled that was supposed to be happening over that period, but that was delayed, so we filled the gap with writing songs that would help set up the next chapter of stuff happening in the world of Cthulhu Dreamt.

How would you describe the release, to a reader that is unfamiliar with the band?

Precursor continues to expand the sound world and variety one can expect when listing to Cthulhu Dreamt. It also begins to establish musical themes and ideas that will be expanded on and used to identify different things in the upcoming Soundtrack we’re creating.

Can you tell us a bit more about the meaning behind the release?

All of Cthulhu Dreamt’s releases thus far are a concept story about a scientist accidentally bringing Cthulhu into our world, and the Precursor EP starts building the idea of people who fight back, and an all-encompassing dream that affects everyone in the world.

The ever-present vibe of our music is in dealing with things that are uncontrollable: grief, depression, loss, anger… all those things, and this release continues that as well.

How would you say that the release compares to anything you’ve done before?

The back half of the release contains tracks that consist of remixes and re-imaginings by different friends of the band, who write music in different styles than we’ve used before… so that’s new for us, though probably not the last time we do it.

What was the hardest part about putting it together, and why?

The hardest parts continue to be finding an organic way to write together. The band members are kinda scattered across the world, so letting the writing be organic takes a bit more work than being able to sit down in a room together and just spitball.

Why should a reader check out the release?

The music, while varied, remains very personal, so if there’s anyone who finds the music meaningful to them, or can relate in any way, then that could be good for all of us; listener and band.

What else can you tell us about the release, that we haven’t covered in this interview?

Well, we’ve said that it contains material to establish some stuff for our next chapter… that chapter is the tabletop role-playing game set in the universe of Cthulhu Dreamt. We’re making a sprawling soundtrack for the game, and we’re pretty excited about it.
