Interview: Dead Defined

When did the initial idea for your latest single come together?

I came up with the outline for this particular song ‘Vertigo’ quite quickly in the month of September. We hashed it out and recorded it in only 2 studio sessions, then mixed it down to what it is. I released the song on October, 21st. This track came together fairly easy as it’s more of a hard driving rock song with a minimal guitar solo mid way through.

How would you describe the track, to a reader that is unfamiliar with the band?

I like to describe my latest release ‘Vertigo’ as a hard pounding 4 on the floor type of tune. A driving hard rock single that was heavily influenced by the early 2000’s era of American hard rock.

Can you tell us a bit more about the meaning behind the track?

The message behind this song is a mantra of sorts in maintaining positive Self-Esteem and Self-Confidence that have been an ongoing issue of mine over many years. I wrote this song as a reminder to myself and others that when that negative voice who lingers in the back of your mind tells you that you’re not capable of reaching the heights of what, who or where you want to be in your life that you will overcome, push through, and persevere.

How would you say that the track compares to anything you’ve done before?

‘Vertigo’ is a bit heavier riff wise than my other previous releases. I ended up down tuning the guitars to B-flat if memory serves me correct, just to get more of a punch and edginess to it for the recording. My vocals are also broader than most of my other previous tracks. I really tried to belt out the choruses in this one.

What was the hardest part about putting it together, and why?

The hardest part was trying to make it my own without sounding too generic. I write very commercially as far as my music and song writing goes. I subconsciously write ideas that sometimes sound similar to other styles of music and bands alike, so differentiating my sound from there’s sometimes takes a bit of tinkering.

Why should a reader check out the track?

If you’re a fan of 2000’s American hard rock this song should be right up your alley. Down-tuning, Heavy riffs and a sweet solo are what this tune is all about.

What else can you tell us about the track, that we haven’t covered in this interview?
