Glaswegian trio Baby Strange are returning with their second album on 17 June 2022 via Icons Creating Evil Art. The group’s upcoming dystopian album World Below explores the depths and emotions tied to the new reality we find ourselves living in among a pandemic burdened frenzy of a world.
Glasgow’s unique energy is something that the band has harnessed with an unrelenting force within World Below‘s ten tracks. Written as a reaction to how the pandemic has played havoc with mental health, the increasingly visible class divide and the meteoric rise of food banks across the country, World Below explores the paradox of the topics set out within.
Vocalist and guitarist Johnny Madden spoke about the new album’s outcome and the buzz the band feels surrounding its release: “We are so proud of it. It’s exactly what we set out to create, an exciting, honest album that feels brave and bold all at the same time. The new era is here and we can’t wait for people to come along for the ride with us.”
The ten-track album features the darkly haunting pre-release single ‘Only Feel It When I’m With You,’ with guest vocals from Hayley Mary of celebrated Australian indie rock band The Jezabels.
Opening the record, ‘World Below‘ welcomes listeners with a groovy outstretched arm, tempting you into an intoxicating dusky wall of sound that intrigues and mesmerises with its narrative lyrics and quirky composition. ‘Beating In Time‘ is an up-tempo banger with a signature dark twist. Embellished with a chorus of sighs, this catchy tune is sure to get you moving. ‘Poor Old Me‘ is a track that packs post punk spirit and a self-aware charm, and following song ‘When It Calls‘ takes a sleek and smooth route sonically, highlighted however with staccato lyric delivery that hits hard at the chorus – a divine blend that makes for a blissful listening experience. ‘Midnight‘ is the album’s final chapter – a dynamic track full of urgency and a boundless energy that bursts through its layers of unfiltered honesty.
Baby Strange have once again delivered quality, World Below is a heartfelt snapshot that transforms the bitter aspects of modern life into something oh so sweet.
