Interview: Mojo Alice

When did the initial idea for the track ‘Sad Face’ come together?

About may last year, while writing the new album. We had two songs pre-written, but “Sad Face” was just a riff that got brought into Mojo HQ as a cell phone recording and really grew from just jamming on it.

How would you describe the track, to a reader that is unfamiliar with the band?

It’s a heavy groove with a catchy AF hook. It really captures what “Mojo Alice” is all about which is big riffs, with an underlying blues element running through.

Can you tell us a bit more about the meaning behind the track?

“Sad Face is like a ‘lyrical caricature’ about what one hears when living with mental health issues , such as depression. There is an almost narcissistic expectation to simply get over it, stop wallowing and ‘be normal’ whatever that is. Written from my own experiences and definitely from a sarcastic perspective. sad face is me!” -Jem

How would you say that the track compares to anything you’ve done before?

It’s heavier sounding and lyrically, it’s a lot more emotive than anything on the previous album.

What was the hardest part about putting it together, and why?

Luckily this song came together really easily and the parts flowed into each other with no trouble at all! We just jam on the riff and through in random changes until something sounds cool and we move it to that direction.

Why should a reader check out the track?

Coz, it kicks ass & grooves. It’s a song that needed to be written and we think we did a great job of it!
