London rock trio PUPPY have announced that their second album Pure Evil will be released this Friday on 6 May 2022 via Rude Records.
This latest record from PUPPY is a product of a stagnant time for all during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic. With writing sessions for the album beginning in early 2020, the group had gathered some basic plans for a timeline of execution until Covid struck. Though the music itself doesn’t reflect Covid-19 related themes specifically, the hardships and struggles of manifesting this album’s creation certainly tightened PUPPY‘s bond as a group.
It was a big learning curve, but feeling like there were much more important things going on in the world kind of took the pressure off a bit in a good way. We just focused on having fun and enjoying ourselves, which when you strip everything away is really the place you want to be I guess.

Pure Evil boasts stand out tracks such as the huge single ‘…And Watched It Glow‘, with its gargantuan wall of noise guitars and ‘Shame,’ which mixes blown out bass and drums groove with lead guitars, simultaneously crafting an atmosphere that leans towards the melancholy. ‘Wasted Little Heart‘ experiments with high-voltage tonal shifts, leaping from sincere crooning poured over striking guitar work to a cranked up scorching intensity which brings a bout of headbanging along the way. This release is peppered with refreshing and mellow intervals of sorts such as the solemn and more stripped back ‘Hear My Word‘ and ‘Dear John,’ before tearing back into tracks full of bite like the bewitching ‘Spellbound.’
The final track ‘Glacial‘ was a last-minute addition by the three-piece, rounding off the record with an ultimate shot of flair and dynamism. “We had the album done and felt like it was missing one more banger, so then we turned this track around in like a week from writing to recording in order to ‘meet’ our deadline and it’s possibly the best song on there. Often we can toy around with songs and arrangement for ages, but that one came straight out the box in pretty much it’s finished form. It’s so short and tightly constructed but I think it sums up our band really well.”
Summarising the album’s personal meaning and the process of delivering Pure Evil, vocalist and guitarist Jock Norton commented: “To us the whole thing feels like a time capsule of this weird limbo period and I think that comes across on the album, or at least I hope it does. Postcards from the edge or whatever.”
Pure Evil places PUPPY at the forefront of modern rock, hitting all the right notes on this sonically stimulating rollercoaster of an album.
