Interview: Attrition

So how has your latest album/EP gone so far with fans then?

It’s doing ok… the latest release is “A Great Desire (1986 – 2004) a Vinyl and digital collection for our 40th anniversary, releasewd on Los Angeles label Sleepers Records, featuring tracks from ATTRITION’s mid period that have mostly never been on vinyl before… I dug into my old box of DAT tapes from the time and remastered them all for a vinyl release… came out pretty well I think… I’m pleased… listen to it here:

Tell us something about the release no one knows?

Well there are 2 free posters with the vinyl edition… and they were added at the last minute so the photographers never got the credit they deserved on the sleeve… Holger Karas and Antony Weir please take a bow 

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

I rarely think of this… but on our 2015 album of First world war poetry (Millions of the Mouthless Dead https://attritionuk.bandcamp.com/album/millions-of-the-mouthless-dead ) we did have a very special guest vocal from a Wolfgang Flur (ex Kraftwerk)…I was blown away by that as they have remained one of my favourite bands!

How has your latest release been received?

The vinyl collection has been received well… the all new ATTRITION album, “The Black Maria” we are finishing recording now so will be with us by the end of 2022… we did release a single from it last year, “The Alibi” featuring the first full video I made myself (I put the lockdown time to some good use as we had to cancel all our tours)… again it seems to have gone down well… I don’t worry too much about that as long as I am ok with it myself… You can watch that song on our official youtube site: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-yAqSkzybE&t=6s

Can you tell us about the meaning behind the track?

The Alibi is my second divorce song…(The first one was “A Girl called Harmony” that we released in 1991, and is one of our most well known songs… I have no plans for a third!!)

What tours do you have coming up, and what can you tell us about them?

It has been so good to get back on stage again after covid…. We have played 4 shows in the UK now since late 2021 and are talking about more here and in Europe and a South American tour at the end of the year (to replace the cancelled 2020 one)
Do check our website for all the latest on new shows!

What venue are you most looking forward to playing the most, and why?

We are playing our local indie record store, “Just Dropped In” in Coventry, with French electronic legend Richard Pnhas, On November 19th this year…. I’m really looking forward to it as its such a great place… even though after 2 in-stores on the early USA tours we did (Borders in 1996 and Tower Records in 2000) I swore I would never do one again!!! 

What else can we expect from you in 2022?

The Black Maria album later this year (in all formats)…probably a new single from that… More shows… some side projects I am working on too… and I’m always busy producing or mastering other bands here in my studio, The Cage… (my “day job” if you like!)…always a lot of music…
