YOVA the artistic duo comprised of multi-instrumentalist Mark Vernon and Macedonian vocalist Jova Radevska are to release their debut album Nine Lives worldwide on 25 March 2022 via Cargo.
The dazzling debut features nine shape-shifting songs with an array of musical contributions from names such as: Daniel O’Sullivan, BJ Cole, Rob Ellis, Ian Oliver and many more.
Jova Radevska’s vocals combined with the masterful storytelling found in her lyrics take flight in a gentle yet striking way – like an urgent and unrelenting flurry of snow, her soft crooning cocoons you in a blanket of pure bliss.
The rich and complex multi-instrumentation comes courtesy of the celebrated Rob Ellis, who also plays drums and writes YOVA’s string arrangements throughout. The album additionally features a variety of unusual and exotic instruments including the Onde Martenot, the Marxaphone and the medieval Sackbut.
Highlights include the upbeat and introspective track ‘You’re The Mirror,’ and the hauntingly beautiful ‘An Innocent Man‘ – a spontaneously written song based on To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The song opposes standard song structure, instead being driven predominantly by its strong narrative. The record finishes on a comforting and moving note, with the soothing ‘Haunted,’ standing at six minutes in track length. Ethereal instrumentals and dreamy notes carry the listener out, swept away along a river of unearthed emotions.
“We never know where our collaboration will take us, this way or that, it is always different”.
— Jova Radevska of YOVA.
Nine Lives is a tale of few chapters, but each chapter (or track,) is written and crafted with the intricacy and layered detail of a thousand stories, the album being laced with a deep sophistication to sink your teeth into.
