These days, building something that is punchy and vibrant enough to cut through the sodden sounds of the over-saturated world of pop rock is a tough ask, which takes bucket-loads of time and persistence. Thankfully, time is something that Canadian pop punk enthusiasts Sleep/less have had on their side. Since their formation in 2017, the four-piece have been channelling the energy of their teenage heroes – namely the likes of Simple Plan, All Time Low, and 5 Seconds of Summer – into their debut collection of tracks, the latest of which, titled ‘My Serenade’, proves why it has been so worth the wait.
Opening with a chorus of heady gang vocals, the bright, racing melodies kick into gear and never once relent from there on out. While the intonation in the vocals carries the slightly stinging edge of early 00s punk rock – in particular, the stylings of fellow Canadian Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 spring to mind – the melody is all effervescent joy, with galloping guitar lines that are all about unadulterated fun. If you’re looking for something fizzing and feel-good to kick-start the countdown to summer, then you’ve found it here.
