Album Review: Miles Kane – Change The Show

Miles Kane opens the album with a crooning candid reflection of what feels almost like a classic tale of self sabotage with killer lines such as “I’m an old school orchestrater/A forgotten cocktail shaker” – By Jaz Morse.

A world away from the theatrics of the first track he follows with “Don’t let it get you down” which features a cameo intro by the unmistakable Lily Savage that is guaranteed to lift your spirits and set you up for this fizzy soulful feelgood record.

This whole album is soaked in sax and jubilant piano courtesy of multi instrumentalist Joao Mello. It lends backing vocals from Holly Quin Ankrah of Liam Gallagher’s band. There’s a beautifully played out back and forth between Miles and Corinne Bailey Rae on “Nothings ever gonna be good enough”.

“Never get tired of dancing” co-written by Simon Aldred of Cherry Ghost is one of those organic songs that originates from two great songwriters coming together and having genuine fun. The result is a harmonious masterpiece put together by extremely talented musicians.

Deeper than his previous work this album is an earnest representation of life’s journey, from heartache to romance and the changes we all face, flowing with every emotion and taking inspiration from every decade of music. From early Bee-Gees pre-disco vibes to Motown, there’s even Bowie-esk influence in there. It’s every era you love with a modern twist.

My personal favourite has to be track 4 “See ya when I see ya”. However it’s the relatable honesty of Miles’ lyrics on every song, backed up by bewitching guitars and piano that makes this a solid work of art.
Miles’ magnificent new release is available on gorgeous red vinyl.
