M.U.G (or ‘Messed Up Generation’) have released their debut single ‘Take This Time’ on all major streaming platforms. The band consists of Kieran James (vocals) and Ben Smith (instrumentals). ‘Take This Time’ has a rocky, nostalgic sound pumped full of raw emotion, with the lyrics’ quintessential relatability fitting perfectly with the band’s brand and reflection on our current collective state, a seemingly messed up generation.
The upbeat track dabbles in the highs and lows of life, guiding listeners on a bittersweet building of guitar strings. The steady incline of a sound that carries its listeners sky-high, soaring towards clouds that are lined with silver, injects a glimmer of hope among grey skies, with the lyric, “F*ck it up/Don’t give up/We don’t know where life will take us.” The sound almost nods towards the adrenaline-rush found on a care-free coming of age soundtrack. In the next breath however, the sharp, adult twist singes like scalding black coffee, demonstrating life’s polarising moments, “Drink it up/Giving up/We don’t know when life will break us.” Returning back to the chorus, lyrics cement the harsh sting of reality, as M.U.G take listeners tumbling into a mature and existential chorus, “We can take this time/But we won’t even know who we are.”
‘Take This Time’ is an introspective reflection on society, an up-tempo outpour of emotional relief which many will find a familiarity and comfort in, a much needed pause to question and ponder the self.
If the sound of Messed Up Generation has struck a chord with you, keep your ears peeled for the duo’s follow-up single ‘Stay With Me Tonight’ which will be available to stream across all major platforms very soon!
