“When a film is as darkly independent as SCUMBAG it deserves to be seen, lauded and recommended. Hellawood Filmmaker Mars Roberge’s film opens up a plethora of dysfunctional human emotions including…Deep breath…Addiction, fear, failure, triumph, self-loathing, the human spirit, sex, plus relationships, work and personal, both of which are sliced open and left for the cinematic flies to feast on. An out of work DJ takes a job at a telemarketing agency and so the decline into the L.A abyss begins. The film has a Skid Row ‘Clerks’ on meth feel to it that just keeps dragging you back for one last, lingering tangy taste. It’s nasty, funny and in places is so close to the bone you can smell the infected marrow. The acting in places is unpolished, but the deliberate lack of Hollywood airbrushing gives this perversely enjoyable film an everyday structure and eye line documentary view. We see the characters break down from within while smiling with desperate pain. Scumbag should be shown to every fifteen year old, it’s a modern-day backstreet fairy tale of what not to do and what to expect from adult life if you don’t knuckle the down and get some scores on the board. Scumbag is a five-star premier Hellawood bootleg street Movie. A gnarly comedic underground journey through life’s living hell. Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life, fuckos.”
