D:Ream’s return: a mature kind of house music

A band who are making a comeback in the world of digital music yet forgoing streaming services sounds like a recipe for disaster, right? But the triumph of D:Ream means that first album in fourteen years, OPEN HEARTS, OPEN MINDS, is something of an elusive exclusivity, and a gorgeous return to the fray from these 90s legends.

Led by the understatedly euphoric first single, ‘Meet Me At Midnight’, the pair effortlessly translate their retro approach to house music to a modern audience, making use of intricate production and ASMR-like vocals. The creation is an updated version of what these guys were doing in the 90s – more modern production and a more varied and mature view on life means that this is house music for adults, a calm and dignified affair, whilst still retaining that cheeky and outspoken spirit which stood them in such good stead thirty years ago.

‘Selfies In Ibiza’ is an unexpected highlight, illustrating that Pete Cunnah has well and truly kept his voice in shape after all these years – and, despite the title, it’s a triumph of a song, taking inspiration from bossa nova and weaving it expertly into their sound.

This album won’t be for everyone, but it’s a real winner if you’re in the mood for something well and truly uplifting – and in 2021, who isn’t?
