Scars Remind Me
So I’m heading into new artist territory once more as I visit Southampton and take a closer look at I The Ruin, a crushing cohort of four who are ready to apply their Metalcore boot to your forehead. Now form a disorderly queue please and take a listen to their debut single ‘Blossoms’ and you’ll see the title belies the content. A slower start that is chased down by a raging chorus, it is not the tiptoe through the tulips you may have imagined.
This record starts with the passionate and all- encompassing rallying cry ‘What the fuck is wrong with me?’ heard by everyone, felt by everyone. Beginning their journey in 2019, Chris Burford- guitar/vocals, Lewis Cozens- guitar, Callum Bisley- bass/vocals and Jak Broomer- drums have absorbed their surroundings, imbibing every ounce of joy, positivity, pain and negativity and delivering it to you via this convenient EP. With ‘Homewrecker’ you get the tantalising mix of smooth and heavy, the agonising ‘I will be free’ and at 2.39 the title comes bludgeoning its way through your speakers. With ‘Voices’ and ‘Scars’ billowing wildly through the metal music industry smokestack, we can have faith that the future of music is in safe hands.
Having spent lockdown alone with our thoughts, whatever they may be, it really is time to re-evaluate how we intend to proceed in a positive fashion, an inclusive manner to make this world a better place for all.
‘Where my mind begins to heal’ what a lovely thought to end on.
