Canadian songstress VISSIA has a way of capturing life’s little moments and turning them into enchanting alt-pop songs.
It’s a skill which few can boast – comparisons might be the storytelling of Taylor Swift and the sass of Dua Lipa, but really the only true comparison would be VISSIA herself. Carving out a niche in the pop world which both calls back to retro eras but sounds utterly of-the-moment, With Pleasure rips up the rule book of what a pop record can and should sound like.
Pop hooks combine with analogue, soulful sounds, a consistent backing of groovy basslines and wicked guitar parts, or heartbreaking piano. Production-wise, it’s light and refreshingly pure, as VISSIA’s voice sits comfortably in the mix. Album standout has to be the cinematic closer, ‘About Moving On’, Vissia’s own take on the grieving process as she struggles to come to terms with the loss of someone she still loves.
With Pleasure is a triumph of pop storytelling, and if there’s any justice in the world, should see Vissia break through to the big time.
