EP Review: Primitive Ignorant – Infant Joy on Midnight

Around Midnight

My friends, I have here the next instalment in the musical story of Symren Gharial aka Primitive Ignorant, the bassist who dares to evoke the thoughts we had long buried, those passions left untouched and those dreams left unfulfilled and unsubstantiated by our current climate. We are in a most heightened state of fear and anger, 2020 has been a form of medieval torture, survival of the richest is the name of the game, and out of this abomination rises a phoenix, a beacon that shows us how we could be, how we should be. Using both personal experience and the crisis we now face as a world, Symren has created this model EP to give a voice to us, to incorporate and include everyone with a view to moving forward in a positive and productive manner that is beneficial to all.

Opening track ‘Last In The Riot’ is a delicate slice of summery electronica, much needed right now to escape the drudgery and depletion of our senses. Music therapy is what comes to mind while listening to this record.

Featuring some of the usual suspects from last year’s album we venture further down the rabbit hole and find a tale punctuated with intermittent bursts of flavour and attitude that stitch everything together. These small interludes help to connect the pieces, notably ‘Tomorrow’ the work of ten year old Elias, an aspirational piece that is universal in its vision. The sound of the dance floor is intimated in ‘Scream On A Razor’ so fill your boots to these techno/trance beats and lose yourself in this illuminating soundscape. We delight in the remix versions of ‘Dress Like Me’ with Leonore Wheatley and ‘Worship Art’ before settling down to the enigmatic finish ‘The Sun Does Arise Part 2’, leaving the audience gently vibing to the left of centre, wispy eccentricity.

Symren has a way with music that is listenable, approachable and fall in loveable, there is a way out of this, some answers, some relief and some wriggle room when you feel overwhelmed.

A lesson in life using the unlimited options that artistry involves, and the promise of a new sunrise courtesy of the original Sikh punk.
