When did you first realise that COVID-19 was going to have an effect on your music?
I started to cancel my upcoming shows two weeks into Lockdown so at that point it had already made an impact on my music. We began rescheduling and rescheduling until eventually all shows just had to be cancelled altogether.
Initially, what was that whole situation like, and how did you overcome/react to it?
It was quite daunting at first, the unknown for all musicians was difficult. It’s unfortunately still very up in the air where live music is concerned. I personally just jumped into the studio and started writing and recording constantly. I also spent the down time engaging alot more online with my awesome followers. All in all it’s actually been an amazing year for my music which I am incredibly thankful for especially during these times. So thanks everyone for all the amazing support, you all rule!
How has your creative process changed over the last couple of months?
My creative process has definitely flourished. Just having more time not being on the road. I get a chance to try out every crazy idea I get now. Experimenting with different instrumentation and vocal styles has become a daily routine.
What’s been the hardest part about writing/doing music this way?
The hardest part has been pulling myself away from the studio to be honest. So many ideas and songs, not enough time in the day. A good compliant though.
What bands/artists have you been listening to over the last couple of months?
I’ve been having a great time listening to all my favourite Viking Metal and Melodic Death Metal bands like Tyr, Amon Amarth, Wintersun, Brothers of Metal aswell as alot of Wardruna when I fancy chilling out.
So, what do you think you’ve learnt the most from being a musician through COVID-19?
I guess I learnt how important live shows are but also that the online support systems for musicians these days is amazing. I’ve still had a successful year even without live shows. Ten years ago it probably would have been a different story.
What kind of effect do you think that it’s had on the music industry all together, and how excited are you to see it return to normal?
Very excited for live shows to return as a musician and as a music fan. I have alot new material that I cannot wait to play live. Going to shows is an experience we are all longing for. It will be great to see jobs returning for so many of my friends and peers who make these shows happen. It’s been incredibly difficult on them, so for them I am also very excited to see the return of live music.
What tips/advice would you like to give to other bands who are also going through this?
keep positive, keep grafting and keep enjoying your musical journey. I’m very proud of all my friends, peers and everyone out there who have kept up the good fight during all the madness. Keep creating music, keep your passion alive and keep sharing your art.
