Album Review: Lugosi – Video Nasty

Irish punk rockers LUGOSI released their second studio album ‘Video Nasty’ on 12 March!

It is a peculiar and diverse album with eight tracks that are bursting with the band’s unique tongue-in-cheek humour. LUGOSI pride themselves on making heavy music with horror and sci-fi influences that is delivered with a groove and style that is unmatched by other musicians.

From the first few seconds of ‘Late Night Slasher Movie’ you’re greeted with searing riffs and raspy vocals. LUGOSI’s wacky humour really shines through on this track through the vivid light-hearted storytelling. For first time listeners this is a great opening track as you get a feel for not only the sound but also the personalities of LUGOSI, making it a really well-rounded opener.

Good luck catching your breath with songs like ‘We’re Here To Drink Blood’. The frantic pace makes this song quite intense and without the comical lyrics heard in earlier tracks it loses its wow-factor.

There is an underlying haunting sound throughout the album masked with punk rock guitar riffs that turns the uneasy feeling in to power. Tracks like ‘I Am The Vampyre’ and ‘1313 Mockingbird Lane’ are prime examples of this and bring LUGOSI’s horror influences to life.

While on the outside this might not look like an album for the faint hearted, it is in fact laced with bold humour and jazzy riffs. It is a uniquely put together album that is delivered with punch and attitude.
