LA based alt-rock band Dead Poet Society are releasing their debut album ‘-!-‘ on 12 March!
The four-piece formed while attending college in Boston and have since accumulated a dedicated following with millions of streams. They are constantly testing the boundaries of traditional genres, so prepare to be thrown through a loop with ‘-!-‘.
As expected, the introductory piece is a head-turner. It is a thought provoking spoken word piece about staying true to yourself and not caring what other people think, a great message to get the ball rolling before screeching in to ‘.futureofwar.’.
Despite contrasting completely from its predecessor, ‘American Blood’ is equally as striking. The soft vocals and gentle chords differ from the electric rock sound of ‘.getawayfortheweekend.’ and is perfectly reflective of Dead Poet Society’s genre bending tendencies. In this album no two tracks are alike, and ‘.intoodeep.’ is a fabulous example of this. It’s filled with bold riffs and a confident swagger that make you want to nod your head and tap your feet!
Throughout the album, Dead Poet Society are constantly working to keep things interesting. ‘I Never Loved Myself Like I Loved You’ adds an indie-pop sound into the mix. It has a much lighter feel than the earlier tracks and radiates chilled vibes that you wouldn’t typically associate with an alt rock band, something that is repeated in the slightly folk tinged ‘.CoDA’.
What makes this album special is the great variation, between tracks. It keeps you effortlessly engaged. Dead Poet Society have explored and experimented with a range of genres, all while staying true to themselves and sticking to the same root sound. As a debut album it’s a great way of setting them up while not committing to one specific sound, it keeps the fans on their toes and eagerly awaiting another new release!
