When did you first realise that COVID-19 was going to have an effect on your band?
By March I already had the idea that it was going to affect all of us. I just kind of knew that playing live gigs in LA was not going to happen for awhile so I decided to focus on writing new lyrics.
Initially, what was that whole situation like, and how did your band overcome/react to it?
I do play with a live band, but I’m also a solo artist so I focused on creating new content and working on my first full album. I had released my ep, Cannibal, on November 2019, so I wasn’t planning on working on a concept album so soon, but suddenly we had nothing but time. My producer and I started to draft out ideas and I went straight to my notebook.
How has your creative process changed as a band over the last couple of months?
I think I have learned to take my time more. It feels so freeing to not have to rush and give more time to experimenting on new sounds.
What’s been the hardest part about writing/doing music this way?
Recording virtually was hard with some instruments. The writing came very naturally. I stuck at home with my thoughts and I began to write.
What bands/artists have you been listening to over the last couple of months?
I’ve been listening to Grimes, Doja Cat, Asap Rocky, Lana Del Rey and a lot of oldies like Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra, and Johnny Cash.
So, what do you think you’ve learnt the most from being a band through COVID-19?
I’ve learned how to adapt and look for other ways to perform live. I never thought I would like to do livestreams, but now I really enjoy them!
What kind of effect do you think that it’s had on the music industry all together, and how excited are you to see it return to normal?
I think the importance of having an online presence is crucial now. There are new apps specifically meant for artists to livestream, along with musicians making Twitch a real thing now for live concerts.
What tips/advice would you like to give to other bands who are also going through this?
I would say use this time to get back to projects you haven’t had the time to finish!
