Silver Linings
My friends, we continue, we endure, we hurt, we hunger for a time gone by, seems like an age since our last live shows, waving our fists in the air and saluting our favourite bands. You know, when a greatest hits album/show is made fans always wish their favourite is included, here tonight my friends I’m really unsure how this setlist was compiled because each tune is an absolute smasher, don’t bother looking for faults, there aren’t any. In the current hideousness, Silverstein have delivered a monster gig. To me they are to Canada what Atreyu are to America, and what FFAF are to the UK, a stunning fusion of emo, metalcore, crossing effortlessly at the screamo- melodic interchange, and attracting an audience that is passionate and unwavering. A twenty year history is celebrated here, addressing all points, all aspects of our lives and making the most of a bad situation, as we are now by participating in online shows.
With the backstory of alien abduction we tackle ‘My Disaster’ and get into a few ‘Bad Habits’ but it’s the ‘Whiplash’ that leaves us ‘Smashed Into Pieces’ taken from the first album, where at all started. It’s like a calming walk in the park and full on riot, in the capable hands of singer Shane Told and his merry band. Last year’s release ‘A Beautiful Place To Drown’ gave us ‘Infinite’ and we learn that ‘how can I be an optimist when all this feels infinite’ it is the very definition of what we are experiencing, circling round and around, no sign of progress. The cleverly designed medley from ‘A Shipwreck in the Sand’ allows the band to cover a little more ground and include a few more songs, with Billy Hamilton offering his voice to show the expanse of talent on offer.
‘It won’t happen again’ taken from ‘Massachusetts’ is probably one of my favourite breakdowns ever, never fails to disappoint.
If my lungs still let me breathe, I’ll see you for part two.
