Album Review: Pale Waves – Who Am I?

Pale Wave’s album ‘Who Am I?’, soon to be released on February 12th, is an emotional and spiritual album covering an array of tackling issues such as heartbreak, self-discovery, and feelings of unhappiness.

Between these issues, the album successfully manages to include genres like alternative indie, punk rock, electropop, and a hint of country styled music.

If you are a typical Pale Wave’s music lover, this album will not disappoint. Tracks such as ‘Change’ and ‘Fall to Pieces’ specifically achieve this, with genres including the typical electropop and alternative/indie that the band often perform in their music.

‘She’s My Religion’ and ‘Tomorrow’ simultaneously covering a same-sex relationship, and both positively disrupt the upbeat tone and tempo within the album. Self-acceptance and discovery is also made aware of in the track ‘You don’t own me’ using the line ‘I’ll be whoever I want to.’

Aspects of country music are also implemented within the album, included in tracks such as ‘Easy’ similarly to the work of artist, Taylor Swift.

It can be difficult to distinguish a few songs from one another, as some carry too similar of a theme and genre. Nevertheless, the lyrical meaning between the songs is genius, as the flicker between emotions and tone help narrate the album and the thoughts behind it excellently.

However, ‘Who Am I?’ takes a separate route to all their other tracks. The ambient take Heather Baron Gracie has on this song beautifully reflects the state of her mental well-being. The song appears almost a cry for help, as this disruption of pace made at the end of the album acts as a conclusion to the singer’s thoughts and feelings.

Pale Waves have managed to cleverly articulate an album that acts as a diary and guide for their listeners. It holds a purpose to create a sense of hope to their audience, that they are not alone in their thoughts and issues that they face.
