One of the most well known songs of Black Label Society, Stillborn, now gets an acoustic version by the singer Aline Happ and the guitarist Rod Wolf, both from Lyria. Released almost two decades ago, the heavy metal song now gains a new life with Aline’s sweet and powerful voice paired with Rod’s acoustic guitars. This cover is part of the series of videos available on the singer’s YouTube channel.
“This song has a strong message. We can certainly link it to many current events and also to personal experiences. My idea was to bring my personality to the song without changing its essence, so a very percussive acoustic guitar would bring weight and softness at the same time. I invited Rod to play, he is already the guitarist of my band, so I knew it would be great!”, says Aline Happ.
Contrasting the darkness of the original clip for “Stillborn”, from the Black Label Society, which was directed by Rob Zombie, the aesthetic of Aline Happ’s reinterpretation follows a more eccentric and clean vision:
“My idea was to bring something from the unconscious that could reflect the fears, loneliness and numbness mentioned in the song, but also the overcoming feeling. Water and water effects are linked to our ego, personality, purification, birth and rebirth. I believe that the year 2020 was something very strange for everybody. Feelings of fear, angriness, loneliness and sadness have overtaken the world. This song could be used as a catharsis”, defines Aline.
The song “Stillborn” was released in 2003 by Black Label Society and is part of the album “The Blessed Hellride”. The lyrics talk about a man that is in an abusive relationship with his girlfriend, who mistreats him to the point that love dies, making him feel dead inside. The song also appears in the game “Guitar Hero World Tour” (2008) and features Ozzy Osbourne’s vocals in the pre-chorus and chorus.
The videos posted on Aline Happ’s channel are sponsored by her fans on Patreon.
