So how has your latest album/EP gone so far with fans then?
We have just released a new EP called “Mirage” which hasn’t been out long, but so far so good! Fans who know us are aware that we tend to explore different types of music, so there is something for (almost!) everybody. The “Mirage” EP covers various genres from Rock to Electronic”, so we have various genres of fans & followers.
Tell us something about the release no one knows?
The song “La Vie en Rose et Noire” was inspired after the Charlie-Hebdo attacks in Paris a few years ago. It originally had spoken lyrics in some areas of the song which listed many of the cities where terror attacks have taken place across the world. We wanted people to realise how far spread the attacks were. However, these were taken out just before the final mix as they didn’t quite gel with the general feel of the song.
If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?
Probably The Cult because we are all huge fans of theirs! Although our music can differ in style, we have done a cover version of “Rain” by The Cult which we really enjoyed doing. You can find it on YouTube!
How has your latest release been received?
It is still early days but we’ve had some amazing feedback about our song “Mirage” which starts off quietly then touches the realms of Rock/Metal in the choruses and middle 8. It is a very dramatic song and fans have said that they can imagine the cinematic view which the song conjures up in their minds. We’ve not sent the song out for radio play yet, but it will be directed towards rock fans. The song “Mysteria-Hysteria” has gone down really well and radio stations loved it!. We released the song “Rain or Shine” as a charity single earlier in the year which is an electronic track with rock guitar, and this has already had widespread radio play. People are loving it! The song “La Vie en Rose et Noire” hasn’t been sent to radio stations yet, but it’s getting played on Spotify and YouTube so we must be doing something right!
Can you tell us about the meaning behind the track?
Mirage” is about a vampire…..in the desert (!!!) and “Mysteria-Hysteria” is our ode to horror films – the latter was especially popular around Halloween and had a lot of radio play around that time.. “La Vie en Rose et Noire” is about a couple on a city break in Paris who get caught up in a terror attack, and “Rain or Shine” was written when Covid-19 reached the UK, in our attempt to reflect feelings of hope and solidarity across the world. Fundraising info is detailed later in the interview if anybody would like to support the cause!
What tours do you have coming up, and what can you tell us about them?
Unfortunately, Hybrid Spirits don’t play live or tour but we wouldn’t rule it out. We are spread across the country and it is difficult for Voodoo Jade to travel as she is in a wheelchair following Meningitis in 2012. We work on our songs electronically and remotely. Each song is passed to each and member to add what they wish, before a song is completed. Lockdown was a positive experience for music writing for us, as we had more free time to work on music individually. We don’t meet up in person very often, but we have regular band meetings on video chat.
What venue are you most looking forward to playing the most, and why?
N/A But…..if we did play live, we’d love to play at festivals because the vibe is just buzzing!
What else can we expect from in 2020?
2020 is almost over and it has been a strange year with Covid-19 hasn’t it! However, local lockdowns have given us more time to write more music and work on other projects.
We have already started recording some new songs which will be on a future release. Again, it is a different feel to the music which we’ve already released, and would be classed as darkwave/electronic. We are still writing more music for the next EP/album so everything could change yet! We do alternate vocals between Nigel and Voodoo Jade, and the next EP will predominately be Nigel on main vocals. His voice is perfect for darker songs!
Paul is focussing on writing a few more songs in the style of “Fear” as it has proved so popular and people really like it.
The band is also recording relaxation music for a series of meditation tracks which Voodoo Jade is currently working on. There are some tracks for general meditations, and some for the development of psychic awareness/abilities.
And finally….. Although “Rain or Shine” was released as a charity single earlier in the year, we’re still fundraising until the end of April 2021. We write it during lockdown in England to reflect feelings of hope and solidarity during the Covid-19 pandemic, and sales from it are raising money for the International Committee of the Red Cross for those affected by Covid-19 across the world. It’s not too late to buy a copy of the charity single (£1.50 or more) to support the cause at our Bandcamp page : www.hybridspirits.bandcamp.com and we send our heartfelt thanks to everybody who has supported both the song and the cause. Many thanks to everyone!
