Lockdown Interview: Days To Come

When did you first realise that COVID-19 was going to have an effect on your band?

Jalen – 2020 was supposed to be our busiest tour year but due to the Rona, almost all of our shows got canceled. So, big oof.

Initially, what was that whole situation like, and how did your band overcome/react to it?

Justin – We felt everything just like everyone else. Initially, it was pretty scary. Limited information was available and live entertainment was instantly cancelled for 2020.

We spent the quarantine writing and tracking new music. We also played a lot of board games, watched a few shows, and ate a bunch of pizza.

How has your creative process changed as a band over the last couple of months?

Justin – During the quarantine, we’ve had the opportunity to learn more about tracking our own music. It’s been challenging, but fulfilling. It gives us a little more control over our sound & it’s allowed you to explore more of our creativity.

I was able to write and track ideas on my MacBook and send the ideas to Brandon and Jalen so they could both work on the songs individually. We’ve never written like this before, but it was a fun challenge.

What’s been the hardest part about writing/doing music this way?

Brandon – Keeping the motivation. It was hard to just write and rehearse when shows were effectively canceled. There were other things we could’ve been doing for content sake, but when the main goal, at least for me, was down, it just was a little more difficult.

What bands/artists have you been listening to over the last couple of months?

Jalen – Joyner Lucas, A Perfect Circle, and K/DA.

So, what do you think you’ve learnt the most from being a band through COVID-19?

Brandon – That we’re all healthy as F@&#.

What kind of effect do you think that it’s had on the music industry all together, and how excited are you to see it return to normal?

Justin – This year has been a unique season for everyone, the live entertainment industry especially. It’s going to take time for everyone to feel safe and for things to get back to normal.

I’m thankful people and the industry are resilient. I’m very much looking forward to being back on the road and spending time with people again.

What tips/advice would you like to give to other bands who are also going through this?

Jalen – Take this time to focus on your creativity and experiment with your sound, and who knows, you might discover a different direction that you never would have considered.
