Album Review: Kill Your Boyfriend – Killadelica

Psych-tinged post punk Venetian duo Kill Your Boyfriend released their dark new album ‘Killadelica’ on 6th November!

This is their first album that features an entire track list made up of female names, all named after famous female serial killers.

The band explained: “The tracks are inspired by their stories and attempts to unravel the feelings that led them to make such extreme gestures.”

The macabre tone of the album is established early on with chilling opening track ‘Anula’. The slow build of the introduction makes it unsettling and sets you right on edge, preparing you for the disturbing album ahead…

‘Natasha’ has a tumultuous beat that captures your attention instantly. The vocals are sketchy and ethereal, adding to the dark vibe. From this point onwards, Kill Your Boyfriend really get in to their stride.

‘Killadelica’ starts to pick up a bit with ‘Nancy’. Its psychedelic edge combined with the intense distortion makes it quite a disorientating listen and one that really gets in your head. This is the kind of album that leaves a mark on you well after you’ve listened to it. With head-turning industrial tracks like ‘Marie’, its hard to pull yourself away.

The tempo is brought up drastically by ‘Eva’, making your heart beat uncontrollably. The frantic pace and electrifying beat makes for an overwhelming listen, one that makes it an unforgettable track. This tempo slowly fades out over the next few tracks in the build up to closing song ‘Kathy’.

‘Killadelica’ is definitely not one to listen to in a darkened room, and it is not one for the faint-hearted. It is an incredibly dark album with numerous twists and turns, but it is an album like no other. Fuelled by morbid curiosity, it’s hard to pull yourself away.
