EP Review: Hidden Mothers – Hidden Mothers

Earth Mother

It’s time for the new breed my friends, extend your welcome to Hidden Mothers all the way from Sheffield, and hold them close to your chest, let them feel you breathing, let them grab that breath and animate it wildly with a passion and a vigour that radiates star quality.

This three track EP is a flavourful mix of Industrial/Black/ Symphony Metal that straddles these genres and produces a sensual yet intoxicating seventeen minutes, radiating a timelessness and levitational pull into another world.  Hidden Mothers are Steff – vocals, Luke- guitar/vocals, Ari- guitar, Liam – Bass and Adam on drums, they employ exemplary discipline and arrangement skills to produce such intense, vital performances, a soundscape that delves deep into your soul, unashamed and unwavering similar to our friends  Oathbreaker and Amenra. There is a mystical element too; enhancing the idea of concealment, igniting our suspicions and leaving us to our indecision- do we dare step over that particular threshold?

First up is ‘Beneath, To The Earth’ creeping darkly, tempting and moreish, it is a style that already has secured a loyal fanbase, but  I reckon we can make room for a little one. The second track is ‘My Own Worth’ and I think during this lockdown we have all had time to question our worth and re-evaluate our lives, it’s an ideal opportunity to press the reset button and move on. Take our friends here with you, take the bull by the horns and determine a pronounced decimation of what once was and scope out a new path together. At 2.30 we find ourselves underneath an avalanche of drums, a consistent pounding and together with that musical uplift at 2.44 elevates this song to the highest heaven.

We finish with ‘ My Blindness, Your Burden’ and as with all songs you can take what you want from here, find your own meaning and form notions in line with your own personal situation. It’s great to see this genre of metal at the forefront, it is heartening to see the progress and expanse of creativity that artists bring.

Some things should never remain hidden.
