Interview: Ellis Johnson

So how has your latest album/EP gone so far with fans then?

Great, I’ve had a lot of good responses to it. I just wish I could gig it!

Tell us something about the release no one knows?

I recorded it in London at The Animal Farm, i was drinking lager at the time, I had a blister on my foot from walking a few miles to the studio every day, so much so that I had to buy some cheap trainers from Tesco. Erm! As well as guitars and vocals, I played the drums on it! Is that interesting enough?!

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

There are so many! I guess it depends on the type of song! My influences are all over the place! From Foo Fighters to gang of youths to John Mayer, Ice Cube and Bon Iver! So I guess I’d love to work with Rick Astley.

How has your latest release been received?

Really well actually! I think you can hear my Blister related peril come through within the vocals.

Can you tell us about the meaning behind the track?

It’s free to interpret, but it’s based around the idea of recovering from heartbreak, but finding it even more difficult if your heart has been stolen, what I mean by that is, if someone has falsely lead you to believe you are in a solid relationship, and you give them everything, your heart included, and it turns out, that trust was based on spurious foundations.

What tours do you have coming up, and what can you tell us about them?

I wish I could tour! I can’t tell you anything about them!
What venue are you most looking forward to playing the most, and why?
Everyone has their pipedream, some are lucky enough for them to come true, I’ve always wanted to perform at the Manchester Apollo. I just love that venue, such a great historic building, and the layout and set up, it’s perfect along with the acoustics. I’ve always said I would rather do Two or three nights at the Apollo than one night at a big arena. Don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t turn my nose up at an arena! In the current climate I’d be happy playing in a toilet, if people were enjoying it. (Not sexually)

What else can we expect from in 2020?

I think on midnight on the 31st of December there’s a good chance it will become 2021 and we can all pick up where we left off. The only musicians benefiting from the current climate are the ones that mime, which is so much more easier to do with a mask on.
