Try to paint an aural picture that combines Alanis Morrisset, Marian Call, (Jill Sobule on Lift You Up with some seriously familiar chanting in the chorus), and Fiona Kernaghan with that clean pop-rock and a very slight Nashville feel. That may give you some idea about Megan’s first outing from 2018 which even tilts at what the Badloves were creating during the mid-1990s. This is some serious driving-in-the-summer music and lifted me out of my doldrums on a Friday afternoon after a particularly stressful week.
The country references are in response to Megan‘s own press description of as a Canadian country singer/songwriter who has made inroads into the world of Americana and country. Recording with the backing band for the likes of Macy Gray, Dwight Yoakum, and Beyoncé on a desk that has recorded Tom Petty, Foo Fighters, and Snoop Dogg, that is a very, very mixed pedigree indeed. Throw Skip Saylor into the mix and you would be none the wiser for trying to work out where Megan is coming from with her upcoming single “Perfect”.
Pedal steel and/or slide guitar, Hammond/Lesley vibrato organ, that Tele-twang and lyrics, based on her own life experience through high school, empowering the bullied to make a stand. From a casual sauntering tempo to a double-paced rocker and back again, Perfect is just that!
Pre-save on your favourite platform now as a companion to “Wild And Free” and, hopefully, as a precursor to / taste of a full-length album in the not too distant future. Megan Freedman – perfect!
