EP Review: As Sirens Fall – L’appel Du Vide (Part 1)

Before The Fall

My friends, we continue dragging our weary bodies through this extremely tense and confusing year, no one really knows what is happening, but the imminent loss of further jobs increases the damage, the hardship and the eventual disintegration of mental health. The majority of us are in dire straits but we still need to be aware of our surroundings, people that need a hand to hold, so we don’t lose them forever. It may sound dramatic but it is a reality we face.

West Yorkshire lads As Sirens Falls bring their swagger to these grim times and give us something to feast on. Their new EP ‘L’Appel Du Vide (Part 1)’  meaning ‘call of the void’ discusses the hideousness in our lives, the ultimate struggle through broken relationships, loss( whatever form that may take) and then finding our way again. A stellar set of tracks all written in-house, replete with take to the skies melodies, sing out loud choruses, if I was running away, this is the record I want with me.

They’ve got their hooks in you my friends, like a precocious pooch they reel you in, lay down the law and there isn’t a thing you can do about it. Talking of dogs, we have ‘Puppy Squad’ but these guys ‘don’t jump for no-one’ and nor should we folks.  We meet up with ‘Lily’ again and the magnetism of that song bolsters the impact of this one. A gentle reminder that established bands need to watch out because someone is always snapping at your heels – Palaye Royale, ahem. The first of two ballads and we celebrate ‘Holy Water’ with its Gospel feel, all- encompassing and all-engaging. The latest video ‘The Wide Awake Club’ sees the boys resplendent in yellow, suited and booted, and delivering some funky moves, and the hit the brakes lyric ‘of all the things I lost, I miss my mind the most’ quite grave and despairing but shows a canny perception of portraying how we miss the material things first.

The big finish is ‘Wildflower’ a humdinger of a ballad so my friends lighters at the ready and sing it through the tears, sing it without fear, sing it until your tears run dry, sing it now we can see eye to eye.

Things get heavy, life takes its toll, catch ‘em before they fall.
