Russian instrumentalists I am waiting for you last summer are releasing their third full length album ‘Self Defence’ on 2nd October!
It is an emotional concept album about the sense of detachment in a big modern city and is full of moments of reflection and loneliness. Their passion is evident throughout the album, making for a thought-provoking listen.
Opening track ‘Brave New World’ gets the album off to quite an unexpected start! Openers are typically filled with an energy that gets you ready and hyped for the album ahead whereas this is quite a dark unsettling piece. It gives you the shivers to say the least!
The first single to be released from the album ‘In Circles’ is quite clearly a stand-out track on the album. It is incredibly atmospheric with lots of things going on, making it an immensely dynamic listen. The underlying chilling tone in the middle of the piece reiterates the mood from the opener, suggesting quite a dark theme for the entirety of the album.
‘Je Me Demand (feat Gdeto)’ really breaks away from the rest of the songs. For the first (and only) time on the album there are vocals, which is a head-turner in itself! They are whispered and airy, giving the track an almost mystical feel, it provides a gentleness that is unmatched by the rest of the album.
This tranquillity is continued in to ‘Everything Ends’ It is a quiet, peaceful song that really allows your mind to wander. It is the kind of song that you inevitably get lost in, and it really leaves you alone with your thoughts.
‘Renascence’ is a really smooth track to end on. It has a grace not heard earlier on and is a nice release for the closing track. This is the kind of album that you have to be in the right mood for to get the full effect. You can’t have it on in the background, you must sit and listen carefully in order to fully appreciate what it has to offer. Although it’s an instrumental album, it has a lot to say.
