Interview: Cruel Hearts Club talk upcoming single Dirty Rotten Scum

Following their no-nonsense powerhouse of a single ‘Blame Me To’, Cruel Hearts Club have releasing another huge gritty anthem ‘Dirty Rotten Scum’.

Bringing a whole new level of fierceness, Cruel Hearts Club have smashed this new single, working with the likes of Carl Barat (The Libertines), Warner UK and mastering the track at Abbey Road Studios.

Having had so much support from so many huge names (Iggy Pop, Sting, Radio X, etc) we had a chat with vocalist and guitarist, Eddie on the single, working during lockdown and their future plans.

First of all, WOW, I don’t know how you three do it! Every time we see your name with something new it always gets us excited, and for good reason clearly!

Ah that’s really nice to hear. It’s been a tough year but we’ve kicked our own arses to get stuff done!

‘Dirty Rotten Scum’ brings the same gritty, grungy attitude we have seen in ‘Blame me too’ and ‘Suck it up”, but what exactly is it that inspired the new track, and does it have any personal meaning to you?

It’s semi-autobiographical, I guess. Myself (Edie) and Gita had quite similar experiences when we first moved to London and we took bits from our memories and moments from our lives. It’s really a love story that doesn’t follow the usual narrative. It’s them against the world.

Obviously, with it being produced by Carl Barat (The Libertines), mastered at Abbey Road Studios and published by W Songs (Warner UK), you must have been giddy about this one. what was it like working with such huge names and recording at the Libertines’ Margate Hotel?

Yeah, we’ve all got a really good feeling about this track. It just felt so organic and fun to write and produce and that’s all you can really ask for. I LOVE Margate so going to the Albion Rooms to record it was perfect really. We worked so great with Carl that he ended up helping direct the music video we did too. We still can’t believe we had it mastered at Abbey Road too – that was a big big deal for us.

Although it has been a bit of a difficult year for many people, you three seem to be smashing through it, what has it been like for you working, being mothers and making such massive rock singles during lockdown?

It’s been Messy and wonderful. Trying to balance everything can be tricky but we’ve done some big things. Making the video for our last single ‘Blame Me Too’ was probably my favourite part but trying to film/write when you have kids in the house has its… moments (as you can imagine). I love that our kids have all been able to see and be part of what we do now.

Was it hard to stay inspired or productive over the lockdown period or has it given you more free time to work and create music?

Basically, we did the best we could. There were good days when I could get everything I wanted done and there were days I could just about get out of bed. It was quite emotionally draining trying to hold everything together but I would have it any other way. If I didn’t have the bands support on things that just had to get done, then I would have been a lot more lost. I’m proud of all us and what we achieved over the last 6 months.

You have so much support behind you from so many fans and musicians (Iggy Pop, Sting, The Liberties) and Radio X! What has it been like knowing how well backed you are and hearing yourselves on the radio?

We feel really lucky of course. We’ve had a bit of radio play, not that much which is what we wanna push for this time as I still listen to the radio a lot. I hear very very few female bands on the radio and we need that to change.

For Cruel Hearts Club, it has already (Musically) been such an amazing year, how/do you plan to top this next year?

We are editing the music video for ‘Dirty Rotten Scum’ today, so releasing this at the end of the month is our next plan. Also, more writing over the next month or two now the kids are back in school, me and Gita can get new tracks started. (In fact, the kids only went back this morning so I may have a tequila to celebrate with lunch).

Are there any plans in the making for upcoming concerts or gigs (socially distanced of course)?

We have a few bits lined up and obviously this summers gigs have been moved to next year so fingers crossed. That’s my favourite part and we’ve all missed playing together cause our bedrooms just aren’t cutting it.
