Pls Pls Me “Too Late” releases September/October 2020

Pls Pls Me 2 Late

PlsPlsMe 2 Late

Single release 11 September 2020; EP release 9 October 2020

Pls Pls Me is described as “a queer indie electro due” that would put them somewhere between the Pet Shop Boys and Moby/Fatboy Slim. Not being familiar with Jimi Fish and Jessie Torrisi’s collective or individual work before being asked to cast an ear over their latest release, “Too Late”, I went back through their back catalogue to try to get a handle on it.

Debut EP” is Pls You and Texas Boi. Acoustic chill with a slight beat in the former and a deeper, heart-felt recollection of one specific and painful aspect of Jimi’s life in a small town on the latter.

Dark Songs” comes across all Portishead on Checked Out while Delilah harkens back to a midpoint between the two tracks on “Debut” with some allusions toward one’s predilection or maybe both.

Their third release, “Love Songs” returns to their Debut on Use Me Up while Start A Fire promises to do just that, while still keeping it well and truly in the background.

So with some preparation we settle in for their third release, expectations on a solid foundation. As so often happens, though they were shattered completely: “Too Late” is nothing like what we’ve experienced thus far, employing more instrumentation, a driving beat, and not as emotionally heavy. The song should feature during the wind-down segment of a DJ’s set.

Too Late is the single from their forthcoming four-track “Stream” EP, in itself breaking with their two-track release tradition and which also features Checked Out. Liar features … is that a toy koto, or a string effect? Both, maybe? More slow swaying which, pleasantly, builds to a mid-set track and more nu-skule R’n’B beats that will elevate it in the aforementioned DJ’s set. Foolish Games retains the beats from Liar and shares the vocals throughout, whereas other tracks have been either/or with some sprinkled harmonies.

These last two tracks are the stand outs from the entire collection, all of which I rate rate quite highly. Keep an eye out for BRKLYN’s Pls Pls Me on your favourite streaming service: the single from September 11, and the EP from October 9; or pre-save now!!
