EP Review: When They Riot – Self Titled

Three piece Leeds based rock band When They Riot released their self-titled EP in December 2019! Their raw, emphatic sound is evident throughout the EP as they aim to break the mould of modern rock music.

With a further EP scheduled to be released at the end of 2020, and a music video due to be out in autumn for their upcoming single ‘Nobody’s Perfect’, When They Riot are steadily making a name for themselves in the industry!
Opening track ‘Silence’ has a definite edge to it and is a great insight in to the rest of the EP. The already intense introduction grows gradually louder before bursting in to a cacophony of instruments and raw vocals. It throws you in at the deep end, giving you the true When They Riot experience.
Their general sound is very much on the heavier end of the rock spectrum and this idea is continued on in to ‘Something to Live For’. Despite it being a bold song with lots of power and attack, in some places the music drowns out the vocals making it more difficult to appreciate the song as a whole.
Aforementioned upcoming single ‘Nobody’s Perfect’ is a dingy track laced with angst. It is one of the more memorable tracks on the EP, making it a logical choice as a single.

Concluding songs ‘Run’ and ‘Waste’ follow the same sounding trend as the rest of the EP. ‘When They Riot’ consists of in your face alt rock tracks that get your heart pumping while testing the boundaries of traditional rock music. As far as debut releases go, this is a great start. I’m intrigued to see what they come out with next.
