Album Review: Sea Girls – Open Up Your Head

Alternative Indie stars Sea Girls are releasing their eagerly anticipated debut album ‘Open Up Your Head’ on 14th August!

Sea Girls have come a long way since releasing their debut EP in 2017 and as of last year really become ones to keep your eye on! The guys are quickly making a name for themselves in the indie scene, and after this beauty of an album the only way is up!

The album opens up with ‘Transplant’. The twinkling, almost ethereal intro erupts in to the most fabulous indie opener! The tempo builds perfectly in the lead up to the chorus creating an absolutely cracking start to the album, Sea Girls have arrived!

Keeping the momentum going is old favourite ‘All I Want To Hear You Say’. After its initial release as a single in 2018 fans just can’t get enough of this song! It has an edge to it that many of their other songs can’t compete with. In this respect it is definitely a stand out track and one that every person deserves to hear live, feel good vibes all around!

In true Sea Girls fashion, these vibes continue on to following track ‘Do You Really Wanna Know’ which was met with incredible enthusiasm after being released as a single earlier this year. This song is a great summer anthem that is destined for a festival stage. It has an insanely catchy beat that you can’t help but want to dance to, what more could you want from a song?!

‘Lie To Me’ gives me slight Vance Joy vibes, it strikes the balance perfectly between soft and upbeat without massively changing the course of the album. The sprightly rhythm and Henry’s laid-back vocals make it a relaxing yet vibrant listen. This sound is continued on some level in following track (and old fan favourite) ‘Call Me Out’ which has been remastered with some added flares making it an even more addictive track!

The most recent single to be released from ‘Open Up Your Head’ was ‘Forever’. Personally, it took me a few listens for this song to grow on me but blimey I fully appreciate it now! The song brings with it a rush of adrenaline, in a strange way its kind of cathartic? I don’t know whether it’s the frank lyrics or the immaculate musicality, but this song is definitely up there!

Now, it wouldn’t be a classic Sea Girls release if ‘Violet’ didn’t make an appearance! After being released as a single and featuring on their ‘Under Exit Lights’ EP, ‘Violet’ has fast become a fan favourite! It emits that fun-loving, lively tone that Sea Girls are known for making it a complete and utter bop!

Anyone who knows Sea Girls knows that they are known for their classic indie sound, however one of the most impressive parts of this album is the different twists they have put on this. They have tested the boundaries of indie and played with all kinds of new sounds. This is particularly relevant with songs like ‘You Over Anyone’. This heartfelt, echoey ballad edges towards a more old-school sound and shows a whole new and unexpected side to Sea Girls! Musically, ‘Moving On’ isn’t really a logical transition from this but as proved already in this album, Sea Girls are pretty unpredictable!

‘Open Up Your Head’ is so much more than just a classic indie album, it dabbles with new sounds and is exactly the pick me up we have all needed! With upcoming gigs later in the year and carrying on in to 2021, things are getting exciting for Sea Girls!
