Album Review: The Aces – Under My Influence

The Aces recently released their new album ‘Under My Influence’ on 17th July! It brings fans deeper in to their world of funk-tinged romance, heartfelt breakups, and relentless positivity as they explore growing up and falling in love in the 21st century.

The album kicks off with hit single ‘Daydream’. This is a playful, vibrant track laced with fun pop flares. The groovy feel and nostalgic lyrics set the album off to a positive, uplifting start and this euphoric sound is continued in to following track ‘New Emotion’.

Following this is anthemic track ‘My Phone Is Trying To Kill Me’, an incredibly relatable song for many teens/young people. It is all about trying to live in the moment but being held back by your phone and the control that it has over many of us. Its an engaging song and really bridges the gap between artist and fan.

‘Kelly’ is a deep song filled with heartache relating to a past relationship. Despite the poignant lyrics, the vibe remains beachy and fun, helping to distract from the otherwise sad tone.

Taking a little break from the party that is ‘Under My Influence’ is more laid-back track ‘All Mean Nothing’. Despite only being a slight change in tone it radiates a relaxed, airy vibe which distracts from the constant pop heard earlier. This is a theme that is carried on in to following track ‘801’.

‘Lost Angeles’ brings the bright vibe back up again with its synth-pop sound and catchy lyrics. Yet again, despite focussing on the darker sides of Los Angeles and the loneliness that can be felt there, the cheery music is a massive distraction and automatically lifts the mood.

The album goes out on a fantastic high with ‘Zillionaire’! its all about finding someone that makes you feel special, which is an incredibly welcomed change in tone from the heartache heard earlier. Despite some of the darker messages, this truly is a feel-good sounding pop album. The relatable lyrics and catchy beats make it an even more addictive listen!
