Single Review: Twist Helix – Frida Kahlo

Newcastle’s own ‘Twist Helix’ are releasing their new and hugely idiosyncratic single ‘Frida Kahlo’.

The single is due for release this Friday 10th July 2020 and is one of many tracks like the already released ‘Louder’, which pave the way for their 2020 album ‘Machinery’.

The distinctive mix of electronica, pop, and indie is pushed into a league of its own with a unique blend of both English and Spanish lyrics throughout the single.

The track is instantly uplifting, driven by the catchy pop hook and the heavy use of synthesisers allowing a whole new wave of sound to jump through and come to life.

The trio commented on the single and the inspiration behind it saying: ‘Frida Kahlo’ is a song about identity. How in an online world we self-fashion an image of ourselves by referencing popular culture and art, telling people what we like, who we follow, what we wish to be, in a manner akin to the tradition of self-portraits.

“Named for the Mexican visual artist Frida Kahlo (an artist renowned for her challenging self-portraits), the track is not so much about Frida herself but how the mass consumption of images deviates from a true understanding of the self in favour of the popular, current, now”.

Bea Garcia (Synth, vocals), James Walker (Drums) and Matthew Barron (Bass) expose the throwaway culture many of us surround ourselves with through the brilliantly versatile ‘Frida Kahlo’. The culmination of attention the trio are gaining becomes no surprise as they take on a whole new level of creativity and style in the single that leaves you wanting, waiting and highly anticipating their 2020 album release.
