Album Review: Asylums – Genetic Cabaret

Alternative Uk band, Asylums, are soon to be releasing their new, supercharged album ‘Genetic Cabaret’ on the 17th July 2020, via the bands, own label, ‘Cool Thing Records’.

With a pinch of theatrics, Asylums pack ‘Genetic Cabaret’ to the brim with punk, agitpop and rock amplifying their infectious energy and sound to politically charge their lyrics to the max.

Through soaring melodies and heavy guitars, the band bring all their collective experiences into one, holding a mirror up to the good and bad sides to our current world.

The off-kilter title track ‘Genetic Cabaret’ is a prime example of this with Luke Branch commenting, “I’d stay up late every night binge-watching the news and political punditry and write songs all day.

“During writing and rehearsals, my wife fell pregnant and the huge emotional impact of that got me thinking about the world I was bringing our child into from a new perspective”.

Tracks like ‘A Perfect Life In A Perfect World’ follows in suit, considering the uncertainty of life after lockdown and the overall wellbeing of the world through the complex melody.

The slightly more punk-edge to the album is ignited by the track ‘Platitudes’. It climbs its way out from a littering of underlying harmonies and steely electric guitars to form the perfect balance of punk, rock and power.

One thing that is common within the album is the slides between emotion. The album is illustrated by the overlapping human emotions which fill various tracks to add weight and depth accordingly.

Taking on a much tamer approach is the melancholy drawl of ‘Dull Days’. It strips the familiar cacophony of sound and turns it into a much slower, more cathartic ballad. The backing is sparsely heard as the track narrates the monotony of life and the ‘tired eyes’ it leaves in its wake.

‘Miracle Age’ similarly brings human emotions into perspective continuing with a much slower tempo. The bittersweet melody and lyrics draw empathy for a ‘Broken Time’ which is hugely juxtaposed by the later fuzzy rock riff that takes over.

The album paves the way for a brilliant power soundtrack whilst putting the world into perspective through deeper lyrics and a spectrum of emotions.

‘Genetic Cabaret’ will be made available on the 17th July 2020 and is available to Pre-order here.
