Album Review: Decay – Staring at the Sun

Liverpool based post hardcore band Decay are releasing their debut album ‘Staring At The Sun’ on 10th July! This is some of the first new material since their ‘Modern Conversation’ EP in 2019, and it is a strong comeback to say the least. It is well executed and demonstrates their capabilities as a band.

Opening up the album is title track ‘Staring At The Sun’. This track aims to hold up a mirror to the human condition, embracing both the good and the bad. It is a relatable track about everyday life and the highs and lows that come along with it.

Following  this is ‘September 27th’ and ‘Empty Feelings’. Both these songs are quite similar musically and fit the idea of an anthemic rock track very well. Although they share a lot of the same elements, it doesn’t make them any less enjoyable.

The album is brought up a notch by ‘Ache’. The heavy music is met with equally powerful lyrics, making this track a force to be reckoned with! But this pace is slowed back down with ‘Feel Better’ and ‘Hold On’, sending the album in a new direction. ‘Feel Better’ is a reflective track about feeling down and depressed, and trying (unsuccessfully) to turn this around. It’s a hard-hitting and relatable listen that is sure to strike a chord with most people.

Lead single ‘Comfortable’ is an instantly captivating track about current life situations and coming to terms with things you don’t like about yourself. The intensity of the vocals emphasises this message and draws on the pain in the song, making it a really strong single.

‘23’ sends ‘Staring At The Sun’ out on a much welcomed softer note. It is a breath of fresh air at the end of the album and the perfect way to round off the constant heavy rock heard earlier. The emotional lyrics make it that bit more poignant, and mark it as a stand out track.
