Album Review: DMA’S – The Glow

Australian band, DMA’S are soon to be releasing their third studio album ‘The Glow’ on the 10th of July 2020.

One thing to note before listening is that this album can take over your life! Every single note, lyric and riff resonates with a passion that marks ‘The Glow’ as an indie lover’s dream.

The euphony of sound is jaw-dropping, progressing DMA’S signature style in their most ambitious album yet which is completely void of any filler tracks.

Huge choruses dominate the album from the get-go, especially in the first track ‘Never Before’. The fluidity of the vocals and uplifting sound is immediately immersive in the best of ways.

From the instantly recognisable vocals of O’Dell to the gritty electricity of the guitar, the title track – ‘The Glow’ marries all elements of the band in perfect harmony. It is an instant earworm which has you longing to be at a summer festival.

The bands fastest streamed song to date, ’Silver’, is third on the album and uses emotional resonance, underlying harmonies and moving lyrical content to power the haunting melody. Raw, bridled emotion fills the well-written love song, allowing the slower tempo to conjure an impossible beauty, making it a perfect teaser for the 2020 album.

Softer tracks, such as ‘Criminals’, ‘Living Alive’ and ’Appointment’ cushion O’Dell’s vocals amongst acute harmonies, smooth guitar riffs and gripping melodies. The tracks embrace a soul-baring element which poetically charges the lyrics to pull on your heartstrings.

Another track to have already been released is the brilliantly unique curveball, ’Life Is A Game of Changing’. It blends DMA’S signature sound with elements from the 90’s rave scene whilst commenting on humanities struggle to adapt. The infectious, electric pulse of the track refreshes the usual limits and boundaries of genre in an ethereal showcase of their talent.

The biggest surprises of the album are the final track ‘Cobracaine’. The otherworldly off-kilter track uses the haunting melody line and electric sound to maximum effect, unleashing a perfect discordance through the build-in power. By maintaining a steady pace, the band showcase their full potential throughout the album in a stunning array of sound and colour.

Overall, ‘The Glow’ is refreshingly beautiful and sees DMA’S signature sound evolve into something truly brilliant!

Every track becomes an insane earworm as their freshly calibrated sound soars through a spectrum of raw emotion. It is going to be difficult to wait for the full release, but the wait is worth it!

‘The Glow’ has been produced by multiple Grammy Winner, Stuart Price (Madonna, The Killers, New Order) and showcases the flawless talent of Thomas O’Dell, Matthew Mason and Johnny Took.
