Originally from the Los Angeles area, Kim Cameron moved to a number of states in the US with her family before settling in Nebraska where she earned her college degree in broadcast journalism. Growing up, she had played the clarinet in her school orchestra and marching band as a child and eventually landed musical theatre roles and sang in choirs in her young adult years. After college, she worked as a radio personality in Lincoln, NE and later worked for information technology companies in their media departments. While continuing to work in the corporate world, she moved to Miami Beach where she began her musical path by joining a local cover band in the early 90s. What is your “backstory”?
I consider my backstory as a dreamer. I guess that is why I am a storyteller. I love telling stories in my songs, my children’s books, my music videos and now in my upcoming animated feature film. As a little girl, my favorite game was ‘pretend.’ So I guess, I have been living and playing within stories for a long time. I also believe dreaming is important. It is important to try and reach or achieve what might otherwise seem impossible.
Can you share the funniest or most interesting story that occurred to you in the course of your music career?
I have had the pleasure of working with a lot of talented musicians and producers. I have always looked up to all of them, never really feeling I was as talented as they were. In recent years, I have had several of them tell me that I have amazing talent…talent that surpasses most of those they work with. It was so surprising to hear these comments…I really had no idea they felt that way about what my musical abilities. It was really rewarding and the most powerful event, so far, that I have experienced.
What are some of the most interesting or exciting projects you are working on now?
My full length animation feature film is the most exciting project that I have ever worked on. From the design, to the writing, to the music to characters to the overall messaging. It’s truly a joy. It’s also been fun to watch my hand sketches and storyboards come to life right before my eyes.
Which people in history inspire you the most? Why?
People who write with passion, who sing with passion, who perform with passion are my inspiration. When you can feel your art and show that to others, it becomes so powerful. I would like to think that I only write or perform from the heart, but often, outside influences can get in the way, like bad sound on stage, or pandemics, for example. It’s those who can block those out and still deliver from the heart that truly are inspirational.

What would you advise to an aspiring artist who would like to emulate your career?
Keep pushing forward with your ideas, your strengths, even when it feels like you are not making progress. Your fan base is out there, you just need to find it.
How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
I am hoping my stories speak to people about giving love a chance. Everyone gets hurt in this world, it is love that pulls us together and pull us up out of places that pull you down.
What are your “5 things I wish someone told me when I first started” and why. Please share a story or example for each.
- Stay away from record labels
- Grow you fanbase by being sincere and being yourself
- Keep writing new music. Not all song are going to connect to audiences. Always try new things.
- Collaboration with the right people is key to learning and expanding your art and fanbase
- Recognize that this road is not easy.
