Single Review: Ives – Better Than Me

Manchester-based band – Ives, have recently released their latest single ‘Better Than Me’.

Despite the big chorus and persistent beat, the catchy track juggles the sound and emotion expertly!

The soothing vocals of Jesper King initially nurse the track with a calming clarity, especially when accompanied by Luis Sullivan on the keys, pushing the mellow emotion within.

The introduction of Alejandro Urbina on bass and Jack Hayward on the guitar, however, allows a twang of electricity into the track, heightened by Mark Zanker on drums to create the springboard of sound that the band excel from.

The huge chorus brings the bittersweet love song to a seamless crescendo riled up by crashing electric beats which punctuate the initial stillness of the verses.

There is a classic simplicity to ‘Better Than Me’ which allows the lyrics, vocals and melody to work in harmony to reflect on lost love, moving on and the nostalgia it brings.

Despite the power inside the song, the element of tenderness and reflection is never lost allowing the natural colour of emotion to shine through.
