RICHARD DAVIES & THE DISSIDENTS
HUMAN TRAFFIC
(Bucketfull Of Brains Records)
8/10
‘Human Traffic is the debut release from former The Snakes and Tiny Monroe guitarist Richard Davies along with his Shake ‘N’ Roll sidekicks, The Dissidents. Opener and title track ‘Human Traffic’ has a deliciously laconic Seventies Rock sound that lands somewhere between Ian Hunter, The Rolling Stones and Tom Petty with a touch of the scarf swaying New York Dolls chucked into the mix. The stripped-back, understated Rock ‘n’ Roll vibes continue on ‘Lay Me Low’ which strolls through long summer grass clutching an expectant hand and a cooling bottle while ‘Way Of The Wild’ trips over raised cliches before stumbling into a life beaten barfly anthem. Lead single ‘21st Century Man’ is a Jack ‘n Diane blue-collar blister armed with a Richards riff resplendent in slightly torn, faded double denim.
The pace seamlessly quickens for the Boomtown Rats-Esque ‘Long Road To Your Heart’ before a Country kissed ‘No Master, No Guide’ is left outside the one-horse saloon clutching a bag of salt ‘n shake. The final duo of a New Wave-ish ‘Under The Skin’ and the up-tempo, all in the pool ‘No Man’s Land’ nonchalantly round off this most welcome breezy summer debut.
