Album Review: Overrider – ‘cyc|er’

Manchester based electronic experimental newcomers Overrider are releasing their debut mini album ‘Cyc|er’ on 15th May! This is a genre blending album that examines feelings of depression, hopelessness, and defiance in the face of isolation. Overrider say its ‘supposed to sound like a transmission from deep space…’

Towards the end of the writing sessions for the album, their guitarist was hit by a car and briefly hospitalised. After this came a burst of creativity which resulted in the making of ‘agitated_|’ and ‘the |eft hand’. These strikingly electronic tracks are riddled with distortion and atmospheric sounds, giving the songs a sci-fi/otherworldly feel!

Following this is lead single ‘ansible’, this track adopts a more alternative electronic sound with heavy guitar, making it one of the albums more aggressive tracks. It is a song about the period where you are cycling out of extreme depression and how communication with others can cure the stagnation of recovery.

‘p ssibility_sw rd’ and ‘Black Hatch’ are two of the most electronic sounding songs on the album. The manipulated textures and samples help create the hacker aesthetic that follows throughout ‘Cyc|er’. Bringing a slightly more chilling tone to the album is ‘anchored | p u n c h’. The fuzzy, static intro and screeching riffs make it even more intense.

The sinister atmosphere is reiterated in both ‘quarter|ess’ and ‘wings over the wor|d’ with their garbled sounds and crushed voices creating the darker layers.

Overrider used code to rip up samples and then added traditional instrumentation over the top, creating an innovative, unique album. The track names are written in extended code, contributing to the hacker aesthetic and making it an increasingly modern album.
