WALLFLOWER have announced that their eagerly-awaited debut album ‘Teach Yourself To Swim’ will be released 05 June. The first single to be revealed from the record is the hard-hitting ‘Hungry Eyes’, which is out today with accompanying music video. Vocalist and guitarist Vini Moreira-Yeoell says of the track “It’s probably one of the heaviest songs we’ve ever written. Where most of our songs are written around personal emotions we all experience as human beings, ‘Hungry Eyes’ is much more politically driven and touches on subjects we believe affect all of us. In the last 10-15 years it very much feels like there has been a shift in the way we, as a human population, respond to current events. With some pretty horrific things happening all across the world, the general reaction can often be indifference and numbness. This song was easily one of the most challenging to perfect in the studio, being very intense in all aspects of the word. We have been very lucky to work with our good friend and producer Lewis Johns at The Ranch in Southampton on each of our releases and his persistence in getting the very best out of us enabled ‘Hungry Eyes’ to get to where we envisioned it.”
Wallflower‘s craft is constantly evolving and this flow of creativity has led them to this year and the collection of tracks that make up ‘Teach Yourself To Swim’. The band draw upon more retro alternative influences, as well as having studied the art of the album through modern classics from Paramore’s ‘Brand New Eyes’ to Radiohead’s ‘In Rainbows’. The art of the LP is one that’s extremely important to the members of Wallflower and they approached their own debut full length with great care and attention to craft something extremely exciting, personal and true. ‘Teach Yourself To Swim’ undulates between more familiar tropes and unexpected twists and turns. Having already touched on themes of existentialism, ageing and purpose within their music, they’ve delved deeper than ever before. The ultimate aim with ‘Teach Yourself To Swim’ was for Wallflower to create a body of art that’s timeless. And they’ve done just that. It will resonate with listeners and envelope their consciousness.
Since self-releasing their debut EP Where It Fell Apart in late 2017, Wallflower have toured extensively across the UK with a huge variety of bands including Boston Manor, Knuckle Puck, Milk Teeth and Employed to Serve. Their emotive songwriting style melds heavy hooks and heart-crushing melodies within an other-worldly atmosphere that lends itself to all manner of live music experiences and platforms. It’s a sound that has seen Wallflower achieve BBC Radio 1 play and slots at lauded festivals such as Download, 2000 Trees and The Great Escape.
