Aquilo share new single ‘Sober’

Silverdale duo Aquilo have already exceeded 250 million streams of songs such as ‘Silhouette’, ‘Sorry’ and ‘Thin’. Despite not releasing any new material since the summer of 2018, Aquilo still command an impressive following with 1.7 million monthly listeners at Spotify alone.

Now, however, Aquilo (Tom Higham and Ben Fletcher) break their silence by sharing the long-awaited new single ‘Sober’. The song is the title track to their new EP of the same name, which follows on June 3rd.

‘Sober’ finds Aquilo embracing a warm, organic sound. Soothing vocal harmonies, elegant piano and raw beats provide the foundations of their sonic approach. Yet the production by Jack Sibley complements their naturalistic style with some subtle electro flourishes that give it another layer of depth.

Lyrically the song examines a romance that’s plunged into doubt. They cleverly use the odd sensation of sobering up as a metaphor for discovering that a relationship isn’t quite what you thought it was.

‘Sober’ introduces the short tale of a break-up that Aquilo will share in the forthcoming EP. The duo have spent the last eighteen months together, developing their sound and working on their forthcoming EP, Sober. It introduces the short tale of a break-up.

We’re both just so excited to start releasing music again. We really wanted to do something a little different but stay true to ourselves. There certainly was no intention of taking 2 years but you just can’t force these things or the process. It’s been a big learning curve for the two of us and we feel it’s the best music we’ve had the pleasure of making. Overjoyed to be letting the songs go and hopefully they touch people in the same way they’ve touched us!” – Aquilo

Aquilo first came to attention with their independently released debut EP in 2014. That resulted in support at Radio 1 as well as their first Glastonbury set. They subsequently released the albums ‘Silhouettes’ (2017) and ‘ii’ (2018) with production credits from the likes of Ólafur Arnalds, SOHN, Johnny McDaid and Lexx.

The pair also featured on Madeon’s track ‘Innocence’, from his debut album ‘Adventure’, and teamed up with Canadian producer Vanic for ‘Losing You’. Aquilo have also been remixed by the likes of Mura Masa and Marian Hill.
