Rising Brooklyn-based singer and producer, Emmett Kai, unveiled his potent new track, “Remember My Name” – further proving his range and dynamism as an artist. “Remember My Name” is the second in a series of singles planned for release over the first half of the year. This latest single serves as a counterbalance to the more upbeat, ultra-infectious, “High For Weeks”, which was released last month. From the moment the melancholy of the opening vocal loop sets in, there is a laid-back irresistible vibe to the darkwave tinged downer-pop track that cements the fact Emmett has an undeniable knack for earworm hooks and danceable grooves. Speaking on “Remember My Name”, Emmett Kai says:
“This song dances around the first time experience. First kiss, connection, love, drugs. I spent a month of 2019 summer in between touring to write new material and seclude myself from big city nonsense. I wanted to capture the rawest version of myself. I didn’t listen to music, and I didn’t hangout with many people other than my family. In this time I wrote many poems and essays, as I always do, but a few specifically stood out when I was writing to this song. A few essays I had written focused on the “first timers” narrative where I shared versions of myself and others going through experiences like love, sex, drugs, mistakes, etc. The line, “even the horses breath with me but not for long” was an image of horses being the only other animal aside from dogs that can read human emotion. It would be the staple line of the song Remember My Name. To me.”
| Over the first half of 2020, Emmett will be releasing new music, waterfall-style, eventually building into a larger release under a different name – allowing fans to witness the album gradually come together right in front of their eyes. In doing so, Emmett is embracing the new meaning of an “album” in the streaming age and taking advantage of the uniquely modern ability to create and adjust a project in real time. Emmett’s mellow, soul-drenched earworms have been featured on the cult favorite TV show, Broad City, as well as by press tastemakers such as Dummy Magazine and Earmilk to name a few. Emmett’s past releases have also found their way onto KEXP’s radar and on playlists from David Dean Burkhart, BIRP.FM and countless others.
